About Race the Wolf

Located at Schweitzer Mountain Resort, Race the Wolf courses are designed to provide runners with a mountain trail running experience within a supportive, front country atmosphere. You’ll run and hike over a range of surfaces as you explore Schweitzer Mountain on well-marked courses through subalpine forest, along ridge tops, and with views extending to Canada and Montana.

Race the Wolf courses offer the challenge and excitement of a day in the mountains, but with an easy drive, lots of aid stations, and restroom availability while you’re out there. Plus a fun atmosphere for your spectating friends and family.

We think it’s the perfect event for anyone who runs or enjoys trails: 5–10km enthusiasts, short distance speedsters, trail-curious road runners, new ultramarathoners, and experienced trail runners alike!

Race the Wolf is a mountain trail event. The races will be held rain or shine, and you are responsible for your wellbeing under possible weather changes that may occur. Keep current with the weather forecast during race week.

Terrain

What’s it like? Surfaces for all distances include:

Rocky two-track access roads. Think rough jeep roads or trail-like surfaces, but wide enough for 2-3 runners side-by-side.

Single track trail ranging from moderately rocky (mixed loose rocks and large “fixed” rocks) hiking trails, to slightly rocky downhill mountain bike trails with sections of smooth dirt and banked turns. Difficulty grade blue.

Off-trail uphill climbs with a slightly defined but well-marked route. Terrain is steep but you’ll be able to hike without grabbing objects for stability. Poles will help but aren’t necessary. Few rocks, few shrubs/small trees, and mostly clumped grass. Sky Climb, marathon and half marathon only. See each course for specifics.

Race day: athletes

Post-race lunch and beverages are catered by Schweitzer Mountain for each Marathon and Half Marathon competitor (Sunday only). Meal and drink passes are included in your packet.

Course Safety

Race the Wolf is an early summer mountain race with the risk of weather changes, bee stings, extreme heat and patchy snow.

Wildlife is abundant at Schweitzer, but they want to see you even less than you want to see them. The number of participants in each event typically pushes animals well away from the course where they can browse undisturbed. Moose and black bears are common, so if you find yourself without other people around, make noise: sing, clap or whistle to notify animals that you’re passing through.

Race day: spectators and families

Race the Wolf takes place after Schweitzer Mountain opens for the summer. The start/finish area is large and grassy, making it the perfect place for spectating the marathon mid-point and the finish lines of all races (except the Sky Climb). Please be aware of finishers running into the chute!

Lift-serve mountain biking will be open with limited access to trails comprising the race course. Amenities like lodging and dining will be open and a very short walk from the start/finish area. Public restrooms and changing areas are also within the start/finish area.

Parking

Parking is in the Gateway Lot, just below Schweitzer Village. A short walk to the start/finish area.

Lodging

Resort lodging: Find accommodations at Schweitzer Mountain Resort & discount for athletes.

Camping: Self-contained RVs, tent trailers, campers and travel trailers at the Schweitzer fire station parking lot only. No tent camping permitted.

Schweitzer Mountain Resort is a 30 min drive from Sandpoint.
